We enable young people to feel part of their community by giving them the opportunity and support to deliver projects that are of benefit to their neighbours and neighbourhoods. This in turn changes the perceptions held about young people by others.
Our Transforming Young Lives programme provides employability, personal development and community support and activities that help the young person to articulate their employment goals and move into work.
Our tried and tested process places the young person at the centre of the programme:
Intensive and systematic outreach based engagement via home visits and street work. We first get to know the young person by chatting to them in the places they hang around. When we get to know them a bit better we encourage them to come along and bring their friends to a ‘pizza night’. In this way we have found we are able to build rapport and trust and find out more about their life goals and aspirations.
Holistic Assessment helps us to identify risk and resilience factors, understand their family situation and any perceived barriers to employment.
In partnership with the young person we then produce a Personal Action Plan that is tailored to their individual needs.
Peer Support builds on their assets and resilience and reduces social isolation.
We take a “recruitment agency” approach offering individualised support, short personal development courses, work tasters and placements, access to employment, education and training and other opportunities.
Referral to local helping agencies who provide specialist support helps progression.
Long term case management is provided to support employment retention.
We have delivered this programme in Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire, Stirling and Edinburgh.
73 – 85% of young people participating progressed onto a positive destination (employment, further education or training).
